The term trapping is used to describe the process of overlapping ink colors on press to hide misregistration which could cause white gaps between colors.

Two trapping techniques include:

Spreads: Ink color overlaps a color.

Chokes: The color is underlapped.

How to do this in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Indesign:

1.) Lets add a black spread to overprint the yellow background.

2.) Add a .5" black stroke to the top object.

3.) Open the "Attributes" panel you can find this under the to menu "Window > Attributes"

4.) With the object selected click "Overprint Stroke"

5.) Check your work go to "View > Overprint Preview"

6.) The overprint preview will tint your colors so that you can check that the Overprint is correct.
